Manchin Can’t Support The Perilous Course Democrats Want To Take On Changing The Filibuster

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) warned Democrats against trying to change the legislative filibuster and lamented the state of the Senate, hours before a months-long fight over Senate rules will come to a head.

Manchin went through a laundry list of reasons explaining why he supports the 60-vote threshold for most major legislation and argued that the pitch from his Democratic colleagues about wanting to restore the Senate is “simply not true.”

Manchin added that his Democratic colleagues “would use the nuclear option to override a rule that we have used ourselves, but now seem to find unacceptable.”

In the Washington Post April 7, 2021, Manchin stated:

The Senator from West Virginia said that he believes in the filibuster and that it is an important tool to protect the minority party’s views in the Senate. This isn’t a new position for Manchin; he has voiced his support for the filibuster. A filibuster is a critical tool to protecting that input and our democratic form of government.

That is why I have said it before and will say it again to remove any shred of doubt: There is no circumstance in which I will vote to eliminate or weaken the filibuster. The time has come to end these political games, and to usher in a new era of bipartisanship where we find common ground on the major policy debates facing our nation.

When Americans vote to send their two senators to Washington, they trust that they will work to represent the interests of their state on equal footing with 98 other senators. I have always said, “If I can’t go home and explain it, I can’t vote for it.” And I respect that each of my colleagues has the same responsibility to their constituents.

While some have criticized Manchin for his stance, others argue that it is a principled stand that could help preserve bipartisanship in the Senate. What do you think? Is Senator Joe Manchin right to support the filibuster? Manchin added that his Democratic colleagues “would use the nuclear option to override a rule that we have used ourselves, but now seem to find unacceptable.”

This is clear-cut that Democrats are trying anything to get their legislation passed. They will stop at nothing to try a shove their ideology down the American people’s throats. Thank God we have two Democratic Senators not willing to do this. Manchin isn’t alone when it comes to voting no on changing the filibuster.

Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema is also against changing the filibuster.

“While I continue to support these [voting rights] bills, I will not support separate actions that worsen the underlying disease of division infecting our country,”

“We must address the disease itself, the disease of division, to protect our democracy, and it cannot be achieved by one party alone. It cannot be achieved solely by the federal government. The response requires something greater and, yes, more difficult than what the Senate is discussing today.”

That leaves the question of, what will the Democrats try next to in an effort to put pressure on Senator Manchin and Sinema? If Democrats get their way with changing the filibuster they will be getting closer to bringing Socialism to the country.

God Bless America, God Bless the Veterans
