ST. PAUL, MN – U.S. Representative Jim Hagedorn (R-MN), son of former Minnesota Congressman Tom Hagedorn and the late Congresswoman and Ambassador Mary Lou Freeman, passed away today at age 59. He bravely battled cancer for several years.
Hagedorn previously sought election to the seat in 2016 and 2014. His win in 2018 flipped the seat from Democratic to Republican representation. This district was one of 13 Democratic-held U.S. House districts that Donald Trump (R) won in the 2016 presidential election.
Hagedorn died while in office on February 17, 2022. Ballot Pedia
Hagedorn had been seeking treatment first at the Mayo Clinic and then last year at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland. He died early this morning, February 18th, 2018.
“Jim was a true public servant at heart, always willing to lend his time and talent to help improve the lives of Minnesotans,” saidGovernor Tim Walz upon learning of Hagedorn’s passing.
“He will be deeply missed by many, including myself.” Upon hearing he was surrounded by family and close friends after a brave battle with kidney cancer. He was diagnosed in 2017.
“It’s just unbelievable. He was such a fighter and it’s hard to imagine he would ever lose that fight,” said Walz after recently visiting Hagedorn at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. “He did not give up on life or his job.”
Hagedorn took office in 2019, making him the first Minnesota Congressman since Jim Oberstar who wasn’t part of the Republican Revolution of 2010. His election to Congress made history for multiple reasons, most notably being the first time an adult member of his family ran for high office. He immediately became one of Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s top targets after taking office, throwing his hat into the ring to challenge her for leadership of the U.S House Presidents’ Conference.
Gun Rights Advocate…
Hagedorn, a lifelong gun rights advocate and member of the NRA, quickly positioned himself at the forefront of efforts to pass pro-gun legislation. He rose to prominence in Congress for his strong stance on protecting Second Amendment rights and was named one of President Trump’s “Champions Of The Second Amendment” during a ceremony in 2019. Coincidentally, Hagedorn had announced earlier this year he would be backing efforts to legalize suppressors for hunting in Minnesota.
A staunch fiscal and social conservative, Hagedorn firmly stood up for Republican values when challenged by Democrats looking to weaken support for traditional family values. On issues relating to life, marriage, gender identity, child sexual abuse awareness & prevention, he stood firm against liberal attacks against Republican initiatives to protect individuals from sexual exploitation and discrimination.
In the wake of Hagedorn’s death, it is important to remember that a Representative is an ordinary American who is entrusted with doing what’s right for their Constituents and Country. We must continue to elect principled conservatives like Jim Hagedorn who will fight for the values we believe in. May he Rest in Peace knowing his legacy will continue on in Minnesota.
God Bless America, God Bless the Veterans
Republicans need to get out and vote in the mid-terms of 2022 and take back the power from the Democrats.
